Based on Body Mass Index (BMI):  body weight (kg)/height (m)²

Underweight:	BMI < 18.5 kg/m2
Normal weight:	18.5 < BMI < 24.9 kg/m2
Overweight:	BMI > 25.0 kg/m2
Obese:	BMI > 30.0 kg/m2

Prevalence of obesity and overweight in the US adults in 2008

• 34% of adults are obese, 68% of adult population is either overweight or obese, and 6% are extremely obese (BMI > 40.0 kg/m2)
• The prevalence of obesity in the U.S. more than doubled (from 15% to 34%) among adults and more than tripled (from 5% to 17%) among children and adolescents from 1980 to 2008
• 9 states have obesity rates higher than 30%, mostly in southern states
• African Americans have the highest obesity rate, followed by Mexican Americans
• 1 in 7 low-income preschoolers are obese
• 17% of children between 2 and 19 years of age are obese and 32% are either overweight or obese
• An obese teenager has over a 70% greater risk of becoming an obese adult
• 300,000 deaths each year in the United States are associated with obesity

• Social discrimination
